GYMNASTICS — Warren senior Kim Gotlund and Stevenson sophomore Ali Castrino captured individual state titles at the state meet finals Saturday atPalatine High School.
Gotlund, who won the all-around state title Friday with 38.275 points, won the uneven parallel bars and Castriano won balance beam both with 9.65 scores. Gotlund also was second on beam (9.575) and vault (9.75) to Prairie Ridge co-op junior Jenny Covers’ 9.80.
Hinsdale Central sophomore Kristen Grilli and Carmel senior Amber Mirski (9.65) were part of a three-way tie for second on uneven bars.
Lake Forest freshman Kylie Carlson was second on floor exercise (9.60) to Covers (9.625).
Top-five finishers earn all-state medals. Other area all-state medalwinners were Grilli (fourth) and Castriano and Lyons Township junior Carolyn Cozza (tied for fifth) on vault, Leyden senior Khrystyna Lychagina (third) and Carmel sophomore Kristin Mirski (fourth) on beam and Kristin Mirkski (third), Warren senior Katie Vovolka (fourth) and Maine South senior Paula Papaioannou (tied for fifth) on floor.
Lychagina and Papaioannou are the first all-staters in their program’s histories.
In the team competition, Carmel scored 147.25 points to capture the state title while Lyons Township (146.775) was second. Hinsdale Central (144.025) moved up to sixth place, and Lake Forest (143.25) was eighth.
This is Carmel’s first state championship since back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993, when current head coach Sarah (Mikrut) Doyle was a standout for the Corsairs. LT, making its fourth straight state trip, earned its second second-place state trophy a and first trophy overall since taking third in 2002.
